‘American Rust’ Season 2 Moves to Amazon Prime Video From Freevee, Sets Premiere Date

“American Rust” Season 2 has a premiere date, but at Amazon Prime Video rather than Freevee.

The series was canceled at Showtime after one season in January 2022, only for Freevee — then Amazon’s only ad-supported TV offering — to pick it up for Season 2 in June. Now, Prime Video will release the 10-episode second season on March 28.

The move further calls into question the future of Freevee now that Prime Video has launched its own ad supported tier. It was previously announced that “Leverage: Redemption” would be moving from Freevee to Prime Video for its third season, while a “Bosch” spinoff about cold case detective Renée Ballard is also set up at Prime Video despite “Bosch: Legacy” airing on Freevee.

Season 1 was based on the Philipp Meyer novel of the same name. Season 2 of “American Rust” is officially titled “American Rust: Broken Justice.” The series takes place in the fictional small town of Buell, Pennsylvania. The official logline reads, “Del Harris (Jeff Daniels) and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives after the harrowing events of Season One. Season Two picks up with a string of seemingly unrelated murders, hinting at a much larger conspiracy that threatens everyone in this small, tight-knit town.”

Aside from Daniels and Tierney, the returning cast includes: David Alvarez as Isaac English, Alex Neustaedter as Billy Poe, Julie Mayorga as Lee English, Mark Pellegrino as Virgil Poe, Rob Yang as Chief Steve Park, and Kyle Beltran as Detective Fisher.

New cast members are: Luna Lauren Velez as Detective Angela Burgos, Marc Menchaca as Vic Walker, Nick Sandow as Mike Orr, Britian Seibert as Cynthia Frazier, Christopher Denham as Russell Wolff, Amelia Workman as Rinna Bransford, Leon Addison Brown as Chief Bolt, and Sara Lindsey as Maya Park.

Dan Futterman developed the series and serves as executive producer. Daniels executive produces in addition to starring. Adam Rapp, Paul Martino, Michael De Luca, Ivan Schneeberg, David Fortier, Nick Nantell, Katie O’Connell Marsh, and Elisa Ellis also executive produce. The series is produced and distributed globally by Boat Rocker.
