Apple To Reportedly Launch An Unnamed Foldable Device As Early As 2026 To Replace The iPad mini

Apple has plans to launch a foldable device in 2026 or 2027, and in the process, a new report claims that the company will replace the iPad mini. However, the latest information does not mention if the new release will be a foldable iPhone or an iPad, casting more doubt on which category it will belong to.

Samsung and LG reportedly shipped samples to Apple last year for its mysterious foldable device

Based on the latest report from The Elec, Apple’s unnamed foldable device will have a 7-inch or 8-inch display when completely unfolded. With the iPad mini sporting an 8.3-inch display and not refreshed since 2021, it appears that the company could effectively replace its compact tablet with something more versatile and with significantly more powerful hardware, given that its updated launch timeline is set for 2026 or 2027.

However, the latest report also states that Apple will eventually gravitate to OLED technology for the iPad mini, suggesting that the company may not discontinue this product after at least a few years. Samsung and LG have been mentioned in the report too, with both Korean manufacturers said to have sent their display samples to Apple last year for evaluation purposes.

Foldable OLEDs are a pricey part of the entire device, and whoever gets the most orders will be running happily to the bank and immediately considered for future orders. Samsung was earlier said to have reorganized its entire display team to streamline the process and accommodate Apple for future foldable products.

Industry watchers predict that the Cupertino giant’s first device touting this unique form factor will either be an iPhone or iPad, though some argue that an iPad with a foldable panel will be released first as it is mass produced in fewer numbers than an iPhone and, therefore, will carry a reduced number of failure points.

Apple will unveil the first OLED iPad Pro family later this year, so the company might transition to its foldable variants after a couple of years. However, a lot goes on in the development process, and if Apple believes that it is simply not viable from a profiteering perspective, it might abandon the launch entirely.
