Pakistan (ANTARA) – At least 19 prisoners have escaped in a massive prison break in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, known as Azad Jammu and Kashmir, prompting security authorities to launch a manhunt for the escaped prisoners.
The incident took place on Sunday (31/6) in Rawlakot district, where inmates managed to overpower prison security officers and escape. One escaped inmate was shot and later died in hospital, city police chief Riaz Mughal told reporters.
Among the escaped convicts are six people sentenced to death.
Mughal said an investigation into the incident had also been launched and a manhunt had been launched to recapture the prisoners and all entry and exit points in the area had been sealed.
At least eight prison staff were detained due to negligence, while the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, in a late development, removed Home Minister Badar Munir from his post.
The race was led by Ghazi Shahzad, a politician from Sudhnoti district in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, who contested the recent regional elections but lost. Several months ago, he announced that he had joined a militant group.
He and three colleagues were arrested last year under a public order that allows the government to arrest anyone who poses a threat to law and order. His three colleagues, however, did not flee.
Another accused, allegedly involved in the killing of a leader of the banned militant outfit Jamat-ud-Dawa’h in the northeastern district of Sialkot last year, is also not at large.
