Washington (ANTARA) – US President Joe Biden admitted that there was a problem with his age and that his performance was not optimal in the first debate of the US presidential election when he faced former President Donald Trump on Thursday (27/6).
Biden, however, stressed that he will not resign and is determined to win the presidential elections next November.
“I know I’m not young anymore. My path is not as smooth as it used to be, my speeches and my debates are not as smooth as they used to be, but I know how to deliver the truth,” Biden said Friday (6/28).
This statement was made in front of his supporters during a campaign in Raleigh, North Carolina.
“I certainly wouldn’t run again if I didn’t believe with all my heart that I could continue to serve as president. There’s too much at stake,” he added.
Biden appeared to stammer and lose his train of thought in front of Trump in yesterday’s debate, causing supporters to increasingly doubt his fitness to lead for the next four years.
After the debate, Biden told reporters that he found it “hard to argue with a liar.” He referred his statement to Trump and said the former president had lied 26 times.
When asked if he had the flu, he replied briefly: “My throat hurts.”
The White House later confirmed that Biden had a cold and sore throat on the day of the debate.
“However, Biden’s COVID-19 test results were negative,” his spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, said.
Meanwhile, the Biden campaign team’s communications director, Michael Tyler, said the campaign’s strategy “won’t change at all” after the debate.
Tyler also stressed Biden’s commitment to facing Trump again in the next debate, next September.
“Joe Biden will be back in the debate on September 10th, we’ll see if Trump will be back,” Tyler said.
