Chinese city pays tribute to woman who stopped knife attack

Nanjing (ANTARA) – Hu Youping, a resident of Suzhou, China, who lost his life after trying to stop a knife attack that injured two Japanese citizens, will be rewarded for his heroic actions, local authorities said.

Hu, who was seriously injured in the attack on Monday (24/6) at 4pm local time at a bus stop in Suzhou New District, Jiangsu Province, died in hospital on Wednesday (26/6).

Two victims who were Japanese citizens were also injured in the attack. One of them is hospitalized but his life is not in danger, while the other was discharged after receiving treatment on the day of the attack.

A Japanese woman injured in the incident said Hu attempted to restrain the attacker, so the Japanese woman’s son could escape. The attacker then turned towards Hu and stabbed him before he was stopped by passers-by and a police patrol who rushed to the scene.

“If she had not tried to hold back her attacker, there would have been more casualties,” an eyewitness told Xinhua.

The attack had shocked all of Suzhou. Many residents condemned the attacker and expressed concern for the victims.

“This kind of violence is very rare here. We all respect the brave woman who defied the attacker and deeply mourn her death,” said Sun Jing, a Suzhou resident.

According to the Suzhou municipal government, Hu will receive the title of “Example of Uprightness and Courage.”

A representative of the Japan Association of Trade and Industry in Suzhou said the incident was regrettable, but believed the case was “isolated” or could be interpreted as unrelated to other cases or an isolated event. He added that the local government’s quick response and concern for the victims was very reassuring.

The Suzhou government has promised effective measures to ensure the safety of everyone living in or visiting Suzhou, and will continue to build an open and inclusive city.
