TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) confirmed that Mount Dukono on Halmahera Island, North Maluku, erupted at 07:33 local time this morning, Nov. 21, sending volcanic ash westward.
The volcano’s observation post officer Bambang Sugiono said in a report published by PVMBG that the volcano spewed a thick column of white to gray ash as high as 1,900 meters above the crater.
“The eruption is still ongoing at the time of this report,” he said.
According to the agency, the volcano emitted thick crater smoke as high as 100 to 2,300 meters from the peak on November 20 at 00:00 to 24:00 local time.
The volcano was also recorded to have experienced 24 earthquake eruptions with an amplitude of eight to 34 mm for about 30.81 to 79.65 seconds, six distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 7 to 30 mm for 55.42 to 160.96 seconds, and one continuous tremor earthquake with an amplitude of one to ten mm.
Bambang urged people living near the volcano to refrain from any activities, hiking, or approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a radius of two kilometers.
People are also advised to prepare face masks to avoid the negative effects of volcanic ash as Mount Dukono periodically erupts volcanic ash.
