Cairo (ANTARA) – The US-made pier off the coast of Gaza is nothing but a political show, Osama Hamdan, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, said on Saturday (29/6).
“The floating dock that the US government has erected on the coast of Gaza is nothing more than propaganda and a political show to save face for the US government,” Hamdan said in a statement carried by Arab television channels.
He said the port had not solved the problem of food shortages in the Gaza Strip.
On Friday (28/6), Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that US Central Command had temporarily moved the pier to prevent structural damage in adverse weather conditions.
The US military operated the pier on May 17, but it was deemed not to bring much benefit to Gaza residents.
More than a week later, the pier broke away from its moorings due to high waves and aid deliveries stopped.
He said it would take about a week to put it back together. However, a few days later, the Pentagon decided to dismantle it again because of the bad weather that was expected to hit the area.
US media reported earlier this month that the Biden administration planned to completely dismantle the pier in early July after it proved ineffective in changing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
