Malawi’s vice president dies in a plane crash

Lilongwe, Malawi (ANTARA) – Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima has been confirmed dead after the wreckage of the military plane he was traveling on was found on Tuesday morning local time in the Chikangawa forest area in the town of Mzuzu, Northern Malawi.

The military plane carrying Chilima’s group was earlier reported missing on its return flight to Lilongwe after failing to land in Mzuzu, Monday morning (6/10).

President Lazarus Chakwera, in a statement Tuesday afternoon local time, said all 10 passengers on the crashed plane, including Chilima and former first lady Shanil Muluzi, had died.

“Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima is a good man. He is a patriotic citizen. He was a tough vice president and served his country well,” Chakwera said.

“It has been a great honor in my life to have him as my representative for these four years,” he added.

Indeed, Vice President Chilima will attend the funeral ceremony of the country’s former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Ralph Kasambara, who died suddenly on Friday (7/6) and is buried in Mzuzu.

However, according to the Malawi Armed Forces, the plane failed to land as scheduled at Mzuzu International Airport due to poor visibility and was forced to return to Lilongwe.

The ill-fated plane then disappeared from radar while en route to the capital.

Saulos Chilima is a 51-year-old politician with a business background. He was first elected vice president in 2014, when he was paired with presidential candidate Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Chilima was re-elected as vice president in the 2020 presidential election, as Chakwera’s presidential candidate, after Malawi’s Constitutional Court ordered the results of the 2019 election to be annulled.
