Russia explains why it abstained from the Gaza ceasefire resolution

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Russian Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Vasily Nebenzya explained that although he believes that the ceasefire plan approved by the UN Security Council has shortcomings, his party does not want to abandon the proposal supported by the international community.

Therefore, on Monday (6/10) Russia decided to abstain from voting on UN Security Council resolution number 2735 of 2024. This resolution was valid after being supported by 14 other member countries of the United Nations Security Council, including the United States as the proposing country.

“We do not want to hinder the passage of this resolution because, according to our understanding, the Arab countries support it. “However, we hope that what we highlight will attract attention,” Nebenzya said, according to a U.N. press release received in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He said that since the escalation of the conflict between Palestine and Israel in October 2023, his party has continued to advocate for a permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages and ensuring the regular flow of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza .

However, the Russian ambassador felt that the three-stage ceasefire plan approved by the UN Security Council resolution on Monday was not clear enough and felt that the proponent had not explained the ceasefire proposal in detail to the members of the Security Council.

“The UN Security Council should not approve an agreement with unclear parameters… and without a full understanding of the position of the parties involved,” he said.

Aside from that, Nebenzia said, although Hamas was forced to comply with the UN Security Council resolution, there was no similar request from Israel to accept the resolution. Israel has not yet demonstrated its commitment to implementing the resolution.

Furthermore, on several occasions, Israeli officials continue to emphasize that they will not end the aggression in the Gaza Strip “until Hamas is completely defeated,” the Russian ambassador to the UN said.

The UN Security Council resolution was passed in the midst of Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip, which has not stopped since October 2023. The Israeli attack killed more than 36,600 civilians, most of them which were women and children, and injured more than 83,000 people.

According to the United Nations, Israeli aggression has displaced 85% of Gaza’s population from their homes, 60% of Gaza’s infrastructure has been damaged and destroyed, and has caused severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine.
