Russia says Israel is obstructing the release of hostages held by Hamas

UN Headquarters (ANTARA) – Israel is hindering mediation efforts to free hostages held by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy told Sputnik.

Polyanskiy said Israel had not achieved any of the objectives of its operation in the Gaza Strip, as claimed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He said that the lives of the hostages are in danger and that the situation is very worrying.

“Israel is actually doing nothing to solve this problem,” he said “This is exacerbating the problem and complicating the efforts of the mediators.”

According to Polyanskiy, the UN Security Council is paralyzed by US vetoes on various resolutions regarding Gaza to “save” Israel, its close ally.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a huge rocket into Israel and breached the border. According to Tel Aviv, nearly 1,200 people in Israel were killed and about 240 others kidnapped in the attacks.

Israel then launched a counterattack against Gaza, completely blocking the territory, and launched a ground offensive to eliminate Hamas fighters and rescue hostages.

According to local authorities, Israeli attacks have killed more than 35,800 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. More than 100 hostages are believed to still be held by Hamas in Gaza.
