Silent Hill 2 Dev Trashes Konami-Edited Trailer, Which Doesn’t Reflect “Spirit of the Game”

Konami has handed the keys to one of their most beloved games ever, Silent Hill 2, to Polish developer Bloober Team, which you’d think would indicate the two companies have a close, trusting relationship! Unfortunately, that… doesn’t seem to be the case. Bloober Team has made a number of pointed comments about Konami’s promotion of their Silent Hill 2 remake (or lack thereof) and now they’ve made their sharpest comments yet, outright criticizing the trailer shown during Sony’s most recent State of Play.

While I thought the trailer was okay, others have criticized it for over-focusing on action and not really showing off the world of Silent Hill 2 at its best and most atmospheric. Even a good game can be made to look mediocre with a bad trailer! During an interview with the YouTube channel inwestorzy.tv, Bloober president Piotr Babieno joked that he left some of the negative YouTube comments beneath the Silent Hill 2 trailer, more seriously stating that the trailer did not “reflect the spirit of the game.” Babieno hopes that when players will have a different opinion when they actually see uncut gameplay (the following transcription was provided by Eurogamer Poland and Google Translate).

“Quite seriously, we are not responsible for the marketing side. Our partner [Konami] is entirely responsible for this. This trailer certainly does not reflect the spirit of the game .

This is neither the spirit of what once was nor the spirit of what we are creating now. We try to fully reflect this ideal vision of the game that debuted 22 years ago. We think that when players see real gameplay, a real game, they will evaluate it in a completely different way.”

As for Silent Hill 2 remake’s visual fidelity, Babieno says players can “rest assured” they’re “using all the capabilities of Unreal [Engine] 5.”

Flipping the coin now to the Konami side, according SH2 producer Motoi Okamoto, the game is in the “final stage of development.” Konami has also revealed that the free promo game Silent Hill: The Short Message has been downloaded over 2 million times.

The Silent Hill 2 remake will launch on PC and PS5. The game doesn’t have an official release window yet, but it’s expected to arrive sometime in 2024.
