South Korea and the United States have completed a review of guidelines for addressing the North Korean nuclear crisis

SEOUL (ANTARA) – South Korea and the United States completed on Monday, in its third session, the review of a joint guidance document on how to respond in the event of a nuclear attack by North Korea. Nuclear Advisory Group (NCG) in Seoul.

“Today, the NCG completed its revision of the guidance document, perhaps our most significant advancement in the NCG’s first year,” US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy Vipin Narang said during a press conference .

Narang explained that the guidelines reviewed with South Korean Vice Defense Minister for Policy Cho Chang-rae specifically included special consultation principles and procedures in the DPRK nuclear crisis.

The review marks the latest development in allies’ efforts to increase deterrence against North Korea’s growing nuclear threat through a bilateral consultative body launched last year.

The NCG was established based on the Washington Declaration adopted by President Yoon Suk Yeol and US President Joe Biden at the Washington Summit in April last year as part of efforts to increase the credibility of greater deterrence in the face to continued pushback from North Korea.

Extended deterrence refers to the United States’ commitment to using the full range of its military capabilities, including nuclear, to defend its allies.

While he declined to provide details on the document, Narang said the document will define the architecture that will ultimately be overseen by the NCG, such as developing options that integrate conventional and nuclear capabilities that can be provided to allied leadership in a crisis.

According to Cho, the two sides reached a mutual agreement that integrating South Korean conventional forces with U.S. nuclear operations would strengthen the alliance’s deterrence and response to North Korean nuclear and missile threats.

“To this end, South Korea and the United States have agreed to develop various conventional nuclear integration options and consultation procedures in the event of a North Korean nuclear crisis through annual government-wide simulations and table-top exercises (TTX),” Cho said.

Cho said the allies will hold high-level TTX – discussion-based exercises – in conjunction with the regular Ulchi Freedom Shield summer exercises this August. The Ministry of Defense then clarified that the TTX would take place before the August exercises.
