St Pauli promoted to the top level after a 13-year absence

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Hamburg club St Pauli managed to promote themselves to the top level of German football after 13 years of absence thanks to a 3-1 victory against visitors Osnabrück on Sunday.

St Pauli’s victory came thanks to a brace from Dapo Afolayan and a goal from their most prolific player, Marcel Hartel. This is the first time St Pauli have returned to the top division since being relegated in 2011.

St Pauli were promoted along with another northern team, Holstein Kiel. Holstein Kiel secured their promotion tickets for the first time after drawing against third-placed team Fortuna Duesseldorf on Saturday (5/11).

“This cannot be explained. “We managed to give something to the fans for their extraordinary support,” coach Fabien Huerzeler was quoted by AFP as saying.

“This is a huge relief and the crowning achievement of our season,” he added.

Former Bolton and West Ham United striker Afolayan gave St Pauli the lead after just seven minutes, and doubled his side’s lead early in the second half with an easy finish to the far post.

Hartel’s header led to the third goal with 22 minutes left in the match. It was his 17th goal of the season.

Osnabrück’s Lars Kehl scored the consolation goal from a late penalty, but the celebrations began soon after at the Millerntor Stadium.

St Pauli, known for its skull and bones pirate flag and close links to left-wing political movements, has an international reputation that goes beyond its sporting successes.

This promotion success continues St Pauli’s astonishing rise under the guidance of coach Huerzeler who is only 31 years old.

Huerzeler took over the team before Christmas 2022, by which time St Pauli were on the brink of relegation. He quickly pushed them up the table to finish the season in fourth place.

Last season he almost brought St Pauli promotion, but managed to do so on the second occasion.

St Pauli are top with one match remaining and will be champions of the second division whatever the outcome of second-placed Holstein Kiel’s match next weekend.

Duesseldorf will surely finish in third place and will play a double playoff against the last third-placed team in the top division. This position is currently occupied by Union Berlin.

St Pauli’s promotion was even sweeter for their fans, because their city rivals, Hamburg SV, once again failed to get promoted to the top flight.

Hamburg were relegated for the first time in the 2017/2018 season and have since failed to gain promotion to the first division. The club is currently in fourth place, having finished fourth four times and third twice, and has always lost in the promotion/relegation playoffs.
