Tah: The key to Leverkusen’s success is Alonso

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Defender Jonathan Tah said coach Xabi Alonso was the central figure behind Bayer Leverkusen’s success in winning the Bundesliga undefeated.

Leverkusen closed out the 2024 season by beating Augsburg 2-1 on Saturday (18/5), while extending their unbeaten record to 51 matches in all competitions this season.

Leverkusen have a chance of winning three titles if they can beat Atalanta in the Europa League final and the German Cup final against Kaiserslautern next week.

“It feels very good. Xabi Alonso is an extraordinary coach both tactically and personally. That’s why we are so successful,” Tah said as reported by AFP on Sunday WIB.

“I’m proud to be part of this team. After so many years, I’m very happy because I finally achieved something here,” said Tah, who has worn the Leverkusen kit since 2015.

However, the former Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich star remains humble. Alonso said that Leverkusen’s success was not the result of the work of one or two people, but rather the result of the team’s perseverance throughout the season.

“Good players can become good coaches. But I have an amazing team here. We have a good atmosphere every day. I’m very grateful to be able to work with players like that,” said the Spaniard.

Alonso said his team will be able to celebrate until late on Saturday, but will have to return to the field for training starting Monday morning (20/5).

“Today we celebrate, but by Monday at the latest we will do our best for Wednesday. We have a clear plan,” Alonso said.

“We really deserve this title, we are undefeated. This is great happiness for us,” concluded Alonso.
