Ten Hag says Manchester United almost recruited Thomas Tuchel

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Erik ten Hag has revealed that Manchester United have tempted former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel to become the new tactician at Old Trafford.

Thomas Tuchel is in Manchester United’s sights to replace Ten Hag who had a poor season in the English Premier League, finishing in eighth place, Manchester United’s lowest position since 1990.

However, the club’s officials finally changed their minds after Ten Hag’s arrival Red devils FA Cup champions after beating Manchester City 2-1.

“Manchester United told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but in the end they came to the conclusion that they already have the best coach,” Ten Hag told Dutch broadcaster NOS on Sunday (16/6), as reported by AFP.

The Dutch coach explained that Manchester United representatives met with him during the end-of-season holidays to discuss the continuation of the collaboration between Ten Hag and the club nicknamed Red Devils.

“The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza,” Ten Hag said.

“Suddenly they appeared on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me. It was a tumultuous season. There was never a dull moment,” said the former Ajax coach.

Apart from Tuchel, Manchester United had reportedly previously targeted other managers, namely Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter, Thomas Frank, Roberto De Zerbi and Gareth Southgate.

Ten Hag is United’s fifth permanent manager since the Alex Ferguson era in 2013, following David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

On the other hand, Ten Hag admitted that he did not receive a contract extension from Manchester United officials.

“The bottom line is that we will stay together and they will extend my contract,” he said.

“But we still have to reach an agreement on this.”
