Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) – The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) Johor Bahru accompanied six fishermen from Muntai village in Bengkalis Regency, Riau, who were arrested by Malaysian Navy officers for crossing state borders while fishing .

Indonesian Consul General in Johor Bahru, Sigit S Widiyanto, when contacted from Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, said the Indonesian Consulate General had obtained consular access for the six fishermen on Tuesday (6/11).

“Yes, we still ask for consular access. “However, they entered Malaysian maritime territory,” she said.

He said Indonesia and Malaysia have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regulating traditional fishermen in marine areas which is not yet final.

However, he said that according to information from Indonesian authorities, the six fishermen from Bengkalis were indeed arrested in Malaysia’s final maritime zone.

“But whatever the story, the Indonesian consulate general will provide assistance,” he said.

A total of six traditional fishermen from Muntai village, Bengkalis district, Bengkalis regency, Riau province were reportedly arrested by Malaysian naval officers for crossing state borders while fishing using two boats on Wednesday (5/6 ).

The chronology of the incident is that on Wednesday afternoon (5/6), as many as six fishermen, namely five residents of Muntai village and one resident of Kembung Baru village, went fishing in the waters of Muntai Sea which directly borders the Strait of Melaka. At that moment, according to the head of Muntai village, the wind was strong, so the boat crossed the border of a nearby town.

The village head admitted that he had received information from one of the fishermen detained by the Malaysian authorities, namely Fauzan. Everything was brought to Batu Pahat along with the two boats

“As our citizens confessed to me, they were arrested by Malaysian officials and took six fishermen and two boats to Batu Pahat, Malaysia, because they had crossed the borders of their country,” he said.
