The South Korean Ministry of Defense prohibits physical discipline for conscripts

SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday it has decided to ban physical discipline training at training camps following the recent death of an army conscript following a grueling disciplinary session .

Disciplinary training is usually given when soldiers commit minor violations of regulations or their commander’s orders.

Last month, a soldier died two days after collapsing during a running and push-up session in full combat gear at a training camp in Inje county, 126 kilometers (78 miles) northeast of Seoul.

At a meeting chaired by Vice Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho on Thursday, senior defense and military officials agreed to ban disciplinary sessions for troop members at training camps following last month’s incident, the ministry said.

In an effort to improve training camp safety, the Army also decided to hold three-week grenade training sessions, instead of the current two, to help soldiers in training better understand explosive weapons.

The move was made after one of the cadets died last month in a grenade explosion during a training session at the Sejong training camp, 113km south of Seoul.

All able-bodied South Korean men must serve at least 18 months in the military in a country that faces ongoing security threats from North Korea.
