US Presidential polls: Nikki Haley wins Republican primary in Washington DC

NEW DELHI: Presidential contender Nikki Haley emerged victorious in the Republican primary in the District of Columbia, marking her first win of the 2024 campaign. Haley, the only remaining challenger to Donald Trump in the race, won 62.9% of the vote, versus 33.2% captured by the former president.
This win temporarily interrupts Donald Trump’s dominance in the GOP voting contests, although he is expected to secure several more delegates in the upcoming Super Tuesday races.Despite facing initial setbacks, Haley has affirmed her commitment to continue in the race, offering an alternative to Trump for voters in the subsequent contests.
It is important to note that Washington is predominantly a Democratic jurisdiction, with only a small number of registered Republicans. In the 2020 general election, Democrat Joe Biden secured 92% of the vote in the district.
Prior to returning to North Carolina and participating in the Super Tuesday primaries in various states, Haley held a rally in Washington, D.C. During the rally, she playfully remarked, “Who says there’s no Republicans in D.C., come on.” She emphasized the importance of personal interaction and connection with individuals, aiming to reach as many people as possible.
While delivering her standard campaign speech, Haley criticized Trump for increasing the federal deficit. One rally attendee shouted, “He cannot win a general election. It’s madness.” Haley agreed with this sentiment, asserting that she has the capacity to prevent Biden from serving a second term, unlike Trump.
Although Haley identifies as a conservative, she tends to perform better among moderate and independent-leaning voters.
